Every day I count the stairs leading up from the N train on 59th & Lex. I stomp 57 up the escalator, stretch and stumble another 36 topside. Then I walk back down to double check. Still 57. Still 36. 93 total. Almost an A when we were kids. Remember, Sarah? When 94-100 was an A? And you were 96 and thinking about Brown? Yeah, well, you never knew it, but I was always the 93. And I never fit in not once not ever, even though you tried and got me invited to 16 Bat Mitzvahs that one year. And I’d forgotten about it until today, 93 beans, 93 faked oh-yeah-that-one-was-easies, but now it’s all I can think about. All those names, and dances, and swimming pools where I’d dip my legs and kick as hard as I could underwater without making a sound. They’re all I can think about. Katie Rosenberg. Julie Terrin. And hoping that one day I’d wake up pretty, a sharp, cool 94+.

Now I count the stairs, Sarah. (93 all in all). And I never seem to make it topside.
