I blink twice at most questions, three times at the stupid ones.
I attempt patience when it comes to new people, the first-meeting probing that ensues. “What do you do? Whom do you admire? What things do you like? What things do you want?” Mostly I can’t help the three blinks that follow. It sounds awful. I know it does. It is.
Recently, however, I brunched with someone who posed a question I’d never encountered: how do you need?
Which brings me to Land Of Talk and the following lyrics from “Magnetic Hill”:
“We need like a song
but that’s not all
we need like a friend
who won’t push us around”
It was a good question, which I felt received a good answer from a great song at a lovely brunch.
I need like a song, for the most part — skilled hands and a kind set of ears. At least for now.
