Manhattan

“Talent is luck. The important thing in life is courage” – Woody Allen

Two years ago that line from Manhattan, and one Wilco song (can you guess which one?), inspired me to dedicate my life to film. I’m a filmmaker. Did I ever mention that? This move to New York is the next step, albeit a rather significant one, in a series of inevitable steps.

I assure you this website will do nothing if not reap the many benefits of such a move.

I also flitted between songs in an earnest attempt to marry this announcement to “the sound of opportunity.” In the end, I settled on silence.

This is a moment for heartbeats, both yours and mine.

I’ve lived in Florida my entire life. Here’s to something new, something stupid and magnificent.

  • yes, it's most definitely good that our exchanges end in smiles. although i'm not prone to leaving nasty comments, unless it can't be helped!

are you very familiar with the city? i lived there (manhattan and brooklyn) for about 6 years, so i got to know it pretty well. lots of things have changed, i'm sure, but whenever we visit i still feel at home.

I'm not familiar with the city at all. I'm doing my best to get a good feel for it, but I imagine time will do the trick. Any tips or words of advice? Places to explore/avoid? Good hiking trails? My roommates are new to the city as well. It's somewhat overwhelming!

And now to look for a job!
  • my best advice would be to learn the subway system! as far as places to avoid, i think those are the things that have probably changed the most since i lived there.

i can recommend my favorite dairy restaurant, though. it's called b&h dairy and it's on 2nd avenue bet. 7th& 8th (in manhattan). the hot borscht is to die for! make sure you get it with a big dollop of sour cream and some challah bread. mmmmm.

also, it's good to learn which avenues go uptown and which run downtown. helps when you're trying to find a cab. :)

my other word of advice would be not to let the city turn you hard. it's kind of overwhelming and if you take all the sad/mean/gruesome things to heart it can be too much. however, if you totally ignore it all then you develop a hardness or toughness that can be difficult to shed later on. it's a balancing act. for now just enjoy the variety and don't forget that a firm handshake is a plus during any job interview! ;-)

Rahawa, I'm so excited for you!!! You're going to have a great time in NYC.
  • rahawa
I hope so, Alfred. Looking forward to checking out ABC No Rio.
  • ah, the world is yours, rahawa, take it and run with it! i was just reminiscing today about the years i lived in new york . . . good times. i look forward to hearing all about your adventures. :)

p.s. think of the bands you'll get to see now!
  • rahawa
Thanks, mjrc! I'll do my best, and trust me, I'm definitely thinking of the hundreds of amazing bands that'll be mere subway stops away each night. I wish the move were happening under better circumstances, but it's thrilling nonetheless, and I intend to seize every opportunity that comes my way.

Thank you for your continued support. =)

PS Isn't it great that most of our exchanges end in smiles? I, for one, think yes.
