As soon as I’m left alone
The devil wanders into my soul
And I pretend to myself
I pretend to myself.

-PJ Harvey “The Devil”

Listen, PJ Harvey knows darkness, knows silent rooms and unlit corners. And she knows that darkness, real darkness, the kind that terrifies you as a child, is actually one of unbearable lightness. Like particles that float in the air. Like fog. You can hear it in her voice, her throat full of the stuff. It’s mesmerizing.

Especially today.

It’s my first Halloween in New York! Dressing up as “Joe the Plumber” or “Tito the Builder!” Still undecided. Thus far I have a flannel shirt, several wrenches and a plunger at my disposal. Also boots and a dusty pair of jeans. Am disgusted with self for obtaining a McCain/Palin button — disgusted — but suppose it had to be done. Time to prepare. Wish me luck!

And happy Halloween!
