Sometimes I dream about you. Sometimes I barely remember, but the bite marks on my shoulders always serve as proof.

At work I keep my distance. Deliver your mail. Hand off your coffee. When you walk toward the elevator at the end of the day I count the seconds until I can stretch across your desk and pretend you’re still there. Facing me.

Sometimes you come back. Forgot your keys. Left your wallet. Sometimes you find me sitting at your desk. Pretending. Sometimes you say, “Can I help you, Kenneth?” Mostly you let me pretend.

Today I make my move. At lunch I will approach you with a large group of friends and casually request your company at dinner. I will approach you with two confidants and invite you out for a drink. I will approach you by myself and ask for the time. I will walk right past you with my eyes on the floor and trip over my shoelaces.

If only you knew that sometimes I got the nerve to dream, and that when I dream it’s an escape from darkness. I close my eyes, rollover, and hit the ground face first; I hit the sun face first; I spall.

Sometimes I think to tell you these things. Mostly I think better of it. Mostly I settle for dreaming.

When I wake, and I barely remember I’ve dreamt about you, I settle for letting the bruises and blood on my pillow always serve as proof.
